Starbucks Copycat Iced Chai Tea Latte

One of my favorite coffee drinks to order at Starbucks is a Dirty Chai Latte. Just think, Chai Tea with steamed milk and 2 shots of espresso! It’s seriously amazing. The spices from the chai tea combined with bold espresso and then frothed almond milk just make me happy. Don’t want a hot drink? No problem.

Living in Texas I CANNOT do hot drinks in the spring or summer. It’s iced drinks all the way. So that’s what we’re doing today, an Iced Chai Latte, and let me tell you… you’re going to love the flavors and the twist I take on it. Instead of espresso I make a cold brew mixture. It’s easy peasy!

What Spices Are in Chai?

Chai Tea is made out of a blend ofblacktea, ginger and a few other warming spices with high nutrients.

  • Cardamom – kinda tastes like cinnamon but with a musky smoky note
  • Cinnamon – for sweetness and overall immune health
  • Ginger – for a spicier note to the chai and aids in gut health and immune health
  • Fennel – gives a gentle anise or licorice note
  • Black Peppercorns – gives the chai a spicy hint
  • Star Anise – can give a deeper licorice flavor, I love the smell of star anise
  • Cloves – high in antioxidants and helps regulate blood sugar levels

What is in a Chai Tea Latte?

Well, similar to a latte made with coffee, a chai latte is made with a chai tea concentrate and then mixed with steamed milk (you could use cows milk, soy or other non dairy milks). A regular chai latte does not have coffee or espresso in it. If you would like to have an extra jolt of caffeine (and my answer is always) then it’s called a Dirty Chai Latte. Meaning that coffee or espresso is added to the chai tea concentrate and milk combo.

How to Make an Iced Chai Tea Latte

There are a couple of ways to make an iced chai latte, my method uses tea concentrate and homemade cold brew that I mix with coconut milk and agave.

  1. Make Cold Brew: To a large pitcher add course ground coffee and 4 cups of water. Stir to mix and let sit overnight. Pour mixture through a filter to separate the grounds from the concentrated cold brew. Discard the grounds and keep the cold brew in a pitcher.
  2. Make Chai Tea Concentrate: Add 1 1/2 cups of water to a small saucepan and bring to a boil. Once boiling add 4 tea bags and turn heat off. Let tea seep for 5 minutes then remove tea bags from the hot water. Allow tea to cool then add to the cold brew mixture.
  3. Serve: Pour latte mixture over ice with coconut milk and agave.

Ok, now that you have the recipe it’s time to get prepping. Everything can be mixed together ahead of time if you like, including the coconut milk. Store in the refrigerator for up to 7 days and serve over ice as you are ready for a smooth cup of deliciousness!

Cheers friends!
